Positano

Perhaps the best example of a nativity village, with its distinctiveness that strikes both the heart and the eyes. Extended along the slopes of the mountains united by the sea, Positano is an open-air museum, enriched by its liveliness, colours, history and character. From the beginning of the 1900's, painters, writers musicians, bohemian artists and members of the international jet-set have continued to frequent the area, resulting in its cosmopolitan atmosphere becoming known all over the world. The residences of Positano, white, pink, peach and yellow houses, weave themselves, spiralling, around terraces shaded by palm, lemon trees, flower-filled gardens and cascading, multi-coloured bougainvillaea. In the words of John Steinbeck, who visited Positano in 1953, Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone". Once you've been to Positano, you'll want to go back again...and again. It is one of those rare places which attracts a lot of visitors but has not been spoilt by tourism. All amenities are here but because of the way in which Positano is constructed - stacks of ice-cream coulored houses built into cliffs and small paths running down to the beach - there simply isn't room for major development or tourist buses.
